"There is nothing in the world more beautiful than the forest clothed to its very hollows in snow. It is the still ecstasy of nature, wherein every spray, every blade of grass, every spire of reed, every intricacy of twig, is clad with radiance."
Dear January, must you leave us so soon? We have loved you well, we kindred spirits who love your many moods of mist and snow and frost and cold. Oh, it's been an exceptional January this year. We got snow!! a very rare and precious treat here in the deep south. I always feel a sense of renewal and hopefulness during this first month of the year when all things are made new again. Maybe that's why I love January so much? there is a sense of wiping the slate clean, of getting a chance to try again, hopefully with a bit more wisdom and experience than before. I am a winter person for sure, which is kind of odd because I was born in August, the hottest month of the year. Another of my many contradictions.
January was named after the Roman god Janus, ruler of new beginnings, gates and doorways. His name is derived from the Etruscan word "janua" which means doorway, and he is always portrayed as having two heads, one looking into the future and one looking backward into the past. If this January is any indication, it's going to be a fantastic year! Many doorways have been opened, so to speak. Doorways to new friends, new hobbies, and a renewed creative spirit and zest for life. Right now, on this last day of the coldest, freshest, most beautiful month of the year, life is good. Life is very, very good, and "it is well with my soul!" Just remind me I said that in the doldrums of summer.........
Blessings, dear friends!!
